Food Review

When I don’t eat with Nick but I’m looking for something fast & tasty, I’ll often keep an eye out for a sushi joint. Nick doesn’t like it, I tend to have insane cravings for it, so it all works out.

Today, I was walking home along Commercial and wandered by Sake Maki. It looked decent, the place was half full, so … what the hey, hey? It was easier than crossing the street to Sushi King or Ginger Sushi (I’ve been before and liked them both), and I’m not overly particular. Honestly, I don’t even mind fast food pre-packed sushi that much, so… yeah, how bad could it be?

Well, the food was tasty. The service was a little slow, but the food came out nice and fast. I had to wait quite a while before I finally flagged someone down to get my bill. Nothing terrible though, and I’d go back again in a heartbeat except…

I’m a little sensitive to MSG. And by “a little” I mean “really, really.” I get a really bizarre high woozy feeling and I don’t like it. My head feels swimmy, I get REALLY tired, and it’s very difficult to concentrate.

I try to avoid this, unsurprisingly. Turns out, Sake Maki must be chock full of MSG because even though I got home ten minutes ago, I still feel like I’m going to pass out. Blargh. Honestly, the last time I had an MSG high this bad was from Richmond Sushi about 8 years ago — I had to cool my heels in Richmond for an hour before I was okay to drive again. Same feeling now. Double blargh.

Oh well. Now I know: Stay on the west side of the street, avoid the east. Sorry, Sake Maki. It was really tasty and well priced, but the aftereffects aren’t worth it if you’re anywhere near as bad with MSG as I am.
