I live in a nice condo in a neighbourhood that is an odd but interesting combination of sketchy and nice. Think “in the midst of being gentrified, but not quite there yet”. There are occasional security concerns. And, like any building, we have a strict “wait until the garage door closes before driving away” rule. Since they fine us if we don’t do this, Nick & I are both good about following said rule.
So the other day, we’re headed out somewhere. Nick’s driving, and we pause in the driveway to let the door close. A sketchy looking guy who’d been standing next to a sketchy looking pickup truck with a sketchy looking company named painted on (sketchily) parked next to the building slips inside the closing garage door and opens the person-door next to it. I look a bit surprised, and turn to Nick “…uh… should we be doing something about that?” “Huh. Yeah, I guess so.” He’s propped the side door open now. I pop out to go chat with them.
“I’m sorry, do you live here?”
“Uh, no.”
“Oh, okay, uh I can’t let you in here, sorry.”
“Oh, we’re doing some work, just waiting for the manager, Bob…” [Note: We don't have on site management. That said, we do have a strata, and I think that Bob is the name of our strata president, but I don't really pay that much attention. Regardless...]
“Um, yeah, you’ll have to wait for him…”
“But he’ll be here soon!”
“Yeah, sorry, no. This is a pretty high security building [ed note: HA HA, yeah right] so I can’t let in people I don’t know.”
“Oh… ”
Seriously weird. But if you’ve been hired to do something, maybe waiting until you’re let in is a good idea, rather than just barging in? It’s not like we weren’t sitting right there waiting for the door to close. And don’t argue with me about it when I call you on it!
In other news, I’ve been reading Not Always Right recently and it’s making me weep for humanity.
In my (legitimate) work for BC Hydro I was always amazed with how trusting people are. Show up with a clipboard and you can get in almost anywhere. However, my dad always had me do the talking, as he found fewer people were willing to argue with me than with him.
Awesome! I’m gonna go break into BC Hydro… :D
Not Always Right is hilarious.
