…and the mocking has started already. Because hey, SOME of us have to go to work…
Yeah, I’m a horrible person, but luckily Nick has either buckets of patience, or a good sense of humor. Possibly both.
So this unemployment thing isn’t too bad. Sure, no job, but at least they handed him a large white bag with a black “$” embroidered into the front so that he could run off cackling into the night. At the very least, there’s no cause for major concern at the moment.
The biggest annoyance is that the mortgage was supposed to be finangled with, like, today. Well, damn. Harder to do said mortgage finangling when you’re technically not employed. If they could have held off ONE MORE WEEK, this would have been a cakewalk. I’m still hoping something can be done, but Nick’s a little less optimistic. Crap on a stick. So, one major stressor in our lives was almost gone… but is back with a vengeance.
The nice thing is, the support Nick’s been getting has been fabulous. For someone who claims to be anti-social and not terribly into networking, he’s had a TON of people calling him with potential routes of employment to explore, from other local game companies to quick contracts in London. He’s even already picked up some extra photography work out of the blue from someone he hadn’t talked to in years. I’m neither religious nor a believer in fate, but I’ll take that as a sign that we shouldn’t panic just yet.
Still, I will temporarily relish my role as the sole (albeit underpaid) breadwinner of the house, if only because it amuses me. At least until he tackles me and gets revenge on me for being a total brat.
As much as I don’t enjoy the uncertainty of contract work, it’s been better for my career than staying in the previous job. Made new contacts, learned new skills, got paid more per hour than full-time work. Hopefully Nick can get some of that benefit too.
He might also do with taking some time off work, if the game he was working on was just released, he was probably working his butt off recently.
Hah, his part of the game was finished in Nov. He’s been sitting on his butt doing nothing til a week ago. :D
EA might work their employees hard, but they do reward them with a lot of time off afterward…
