So I was at Future Shop on Friday night, doing a little Christmas shopping (shocking). I picked up a [redacted] for [Never You Mind], which had to be retrieved from a salesperson directly so they could go in the little back room and get it. Fine. So the kid comes out, and he can’t be more than 18. Well, 18 yr olds need jobs too, that’s fine. Asks me if I want to buy a kit to protect the screen. “No thanks” I say. “If you ever plan on taking it out of the box, it’ll get scratched.” “That’s okay. I’ve got one myself, and they really don’t scratch that much.”
He gets a snotty look on his face and takes me straight to the register. Well, actually, I wasn’t quite finished… oh fuck it, I just want to get out of the store ASAP, I can buy the rest of the stuff I wanted elsewhere.
Of course then the kid asks if I want the extended warranty. I know they HAVE to ask, but do they really have to be so pushy about it? I decline politely, and the kid says all bitchy-like “I didn’t think so.”
Hey kid? Fuck you. No, I don’t want to buy your extra scam items. I appreciate your efforts to upsell me, but I know what I want, and that’s enough. I was perfectly polite to you, you don’t need to be a snotty little fuck to me.
This? This is why I try to avoid shopping at Future Shop.
While his attitude is utterly horrific, maybe the management somehow ties in their pay/etc into how much extra stuff they upsell.
I heard a great way to get money off of high-end electronics is to ask them for a discount on the sticker price while going on an on about getting the uber-extended warranty. Then you get the discount (and the warranty). The next day, cancel the warranty. ;-)
Oh, absolutely — Future Shop employees all get paid commission off their upsells. But I came pretty close to saying “Fuck you” and walking out due to his attitude. How’s THAT going to help his commission?
