There are no words for how gross I feel today. This will make things SO MUCH BETTER. (Also, this time, I’ll take care of my hair BEFORE it dries, to avoid the frizzies I’ve been cursed with today.)
Thank you, Expert Electric, for figuring out what is most likely the problem, even though it wasn’t technically electrical (which surprised him, based on the symptoms.) Hopefully the fix we have for the meantime will work… so I have HOT WATER! cha cha cha! And if not, well, at least we know where the problem is so Mr. Gas Man can come fix it for good.
It seems that the heater here has an electric starter, so there’s no pilot light. Ok, cool. So, it goes through the startup process and … starts up. Mr. Electrician Man figured it was choking somewhere in the startup process. Not so, it goes through just fine. However, once it finished starting up, the gas flame isn’t getting enough oxygen and it’s not burning hot enough… and it shuts itself off eventually.
So… we leave a little door at the bottom open, and it gets enough air in there, and voila! It doesn’t shut down taking our precious, precious hot water with it. I suppose there’s a vent somewhere else that isn’t letting enough air in, but damned if I know where that is (neither did the electrician.) What do I look like, Mr. Gas Man?
All in all, $200 to be told “leave the little door open”. Ah, civilization…
