So last night, Nick met some of my family — namely, my mother, step-father, sister, and assorted step-family to boot. Given how much he absolutely did NOT want to go, I think it went pretty well.
Highlights:
- Our idea of saying grace is evidently to sing “Mercedes Benz” by Janis Joplin. What? It’s a prayer!
- My step-father’s sister-in-law (I will not be calling her “aunt”, she’s barely older than I am) encouraging her 14 yr old son to “Ask Nick about video games!” and him absolutely refusing to say a word. Eventually, it came out that he has one of the games Nick worked on, which I think impressed him despite his reluctance to, say, engage in conversation. (Slightly related, things that amuse me: Nick is evidently a mini-boss in Need for Speed: Most Wanted. Wait a sec… Nick drives a corvette and goes by the name “Webster”? Since when?)
- Justice impressing the heck out of EVERYBODY since they last saw her. She didn’t try to kill anyone, not even the aforementioned 14 yr old who she’s been known to Intensely Hate, or the neighbour who’s always been rather afraid of the snarly little freak. I think part of it is because she’s very “home” defensive, and she has a new home to defend, but even aside from that… she’s just much better behaved in general. Well, unless there’s something in the back yard to bark at insanely. Nutbar.
- The 6 & 7 yr old girls (aka, the sister & the step-cousin) who decided to play “Let’s spy on Donna”… except, Donna (who kept catching them, but didn’t know what they were doing) didn’t really give a rats ass. Huh. More entertaining was when they forbid me from kissing Nick, because ewwww, kissing. Oh come on, it’s not like we were necking or playing tonsil hockey, it was just a friendly “I love you for not running screaming into the night after meeting my crazy, crazy family” kiss!
- Nick didn’t run screaming into the night! Wow. However, I think he may have seen where I get my very, very mean sense of humour from. For example, when the aforementioned 14 yr old cousin turned 14… well, let’s just say that this video gets quoted a lot to him. It’s good for him, it’ll make him thick skinned, right?
I think he’s off the hook for a while now. At least til Carol Ann’s birthday, at least.
Did I ever mention how happy I am that Nick’s family all lives 5-18 hours away by plane? My life is good.
