Thoroughly Awesome Birthday

If this is what being 29 is like (even if I’m not QUITE 29 yet) then I approve.

Last night, Nick & I raced up to Whistler after work, arriving just in time to don our fancy duds and head into the village for dinner. We both looked awesome, had a fabulous dinner, and then back to the condo to curl up on the pull out couch with the dog and watch the debate. We might be a little dull, but hey, I like us. (Highlight: Obama calling John McCain “Jim”.)

This morning, we woke up bright and early to the dog barking madly. Seriously, dog, shut UP. There wasn’t much room in the bed for her — going from a King size bed to a Double is … um … honey, why are you on my side? Whatdya mean you’re falling off on your side? Get away from me, I’m trying to sleep!

Anyway, I ended up getting up to take the dog for a walk. Damnit, dog, I had a nice warm bed that you pulled me out of … and then when I got back, SHE jumped in, and left me out in the cold. Bah!

We eventually got up, and spent some time in the hot tub. Makes up for not being in the nice warm bed: hot tubs are even better. Must get hot tub. Perhaps could replace kitchen with hot tub. Who needs a kitchen anyway?

After a nice soak in the recently renovated hot tub, we headed into the village for breakfast and… zipline!

It was, to put it lightly, a total blast. Not quite as adrenaline inducing as I thought it would be — I think I’m getting overly acclimatized to doing crazy things, or maybe this just wasn’t very scary — but absolutely gorgeous up there, and completely fabulous and loads of fun. Since it was also an “ecotour”, we got a bit of a talk about sustainability while we went, which was interesting, but nothing terribly new & fascinating. Was happy to hear that part of our ticket proceeds went to a few awesome charities, like Doctors Without Borders (who sadly don’t take paramedics. Dang.)

High

Anyway, it was totally awesome, and we both had a great time. On the last zip, we even flipped upside down for the ride. Whee!

Afterwards, we wandered around the village a bit, and I was thoroughly disappointed that Cows didn’t have a new line of pajamas yet — I’ve already GOT those ones

Alas. So, we picked up some ice cream, headed back to the condo to a happy little Justice-in-a-box (she’s crated when she’s alone in strange places) and I took her for a walk to Alpha Lake Park — into the middle of a wedding. Hmm. Maybe we’ll avoid the people in their suits and gowns and go hit up the other side of the park…

She was awesome. One of the things we’ve been working on is a “remote sit” — ie, I tell her to sit and she does RIGHT THERE. Most dogs will come to you and sit, if they haven’t been trained specifically to sit immediately. My trainer was adamant that this is vitally important for any city dog (hell, even suburban dogs) who’s allowed off leash in an unfenced area to know. I sort of saw the use, but wasn’t terribly convinced since I tend to keep her pretty close to me when she’s off leash.

But, I like Justice to know things, so we’ve been working on it. And a good thing, too: The path through the park is a combo pedestrian/bike path. I was on the pedestrian side, and Justice was on the grass running around with some other dogs. I called her back as it was time to go, and she started tearing toward me… just as a cyclist comes around the corner in the pedestrian side. The path she was on to get to me wasn’t QUITE a guaranteed collision, as I was slightly off the path, but she would have run up awfully close to the cyclist (and she’s not always the brightest about things like that, and gets scared easily.)

I call out “sit”, thinking she probably won’t answer, and move further off the path so that she’ll have to change direction to get to me and not go near the cyclist, but she drops! Right there! Exactly where she was when I said sit! Holy crap! Even the cyclist was impressed, and commented on it as he went flying by.

I was so damn pleased I grinned like a total fool. My dog can sit! Over there! Oh, good girl. This makes up for booting me out of bed…

Yes, I’m almost as excited at my dog doing something awesome as I am about flying over trees and rivers and olympic Luge tracks…

Anyway, we headed home at about 5, made excellent time, and arrived in time to goof off for a bit before heading out to Pirate Sin. Arrr. I seem to remember writing something last night about that, but was exhausted and possibly a little drunk. Hmm.

All in all… such an awesome birthday weekend so far. Thanks, Nick! Love you, baby.
