Really more of a minor deity…
All right, so I’m drinking the Rock Band coffee. Sniffing the Rock Band glue. Or, given the number of hookers & blow jokes that go around when we play, snorting the Rock Band coke. It’s a good game. I have settled into my happy place as a bass player, to the point now that when I listen to songs, I actually hear the baseline. How fucked up is that? Rock Band isn’t supposed to improve my musical ability…
So last night, there were four of us playing the Rock Band, and overall? Not terribly bad. I’m averaging in the mid to high 90s on Medium for most songs. Evidently this is where I’m supposed to switch to hard, but I might wait until I can practice that one on my own. I can’t let down the band, you know.
There was one song, (which, of course, is slipping my mind — I’ll update this when I figure out which one it was) “Run to the Hills” by Iron Maiden, that apparently is near-impossible on the drums on expert. So we tried it. All four of us, playing the drums at once. We each took one color. I had green, which only popped up every 10-20 seconds, and I still sucked ass. In my defense, I didn’t actually have a drumstick — there were four, but they were all taken by people with harder parts. Fiiine.
On the upside, I can’t remember the last time I laughed that hard, so it’s all good. I think we had something like 56% of the correct notes hit. Oh yeah, we’re superstars.
“Run to the Hills” was the No.1 song on my fav treeplanting cassette. I think I had it on each side two or three times. One day I hit the end of my block, looked up, and noticed that a black bear was just sitting on its butt, maybe 20 feet away, regarding me like I was an interesting insect. What was my theme music for that moment? Guess.
The moment when I decided that Rock Band was incontrovertibly the greatest game ever was at the end of “Run to the Hills,” when during the Big Rock Ending, the guitarist smashes his/her guitar into the stage, and for the final chord, ELBOW DROPS THE GUITAR.
Asskickery of the highest order. No idea how I’m going to beat that one on Guitar on Expert (I’m still a stage away from it).
As for the drums… I limp lamely along on Easy, and still fail the harder songs, so more power to you.
