For whatever reason, I’ve never had dim sum. I’m not sure how this happened, what with living in Vancouver for the last 6 years, and not far from it for another 20… but, strange but true. I am evidently not as multicultural as I thought.
Jenn’s parents picked us up this morning at 11. Jenn asks me if I’m ready to go… I notice that I’ve still got wet hair and am in my bathrobe. Er, no? I haul ass into my bedroom just as the phone rings. “Five minutes!” I call. She tells her mom that we’ll meet them behind our place in five minutes. Her mom says, “It won’t take that long.” She says, “It’ll take US that long…” Way to make a good impression, Donna. oy.
So, I hurridly throw on clothes, blowdry my hair (the benefits to short, extremely fine hair — 30 seconds of blowdrying and it’s basically dry) and some lipstick, and I’m presentable. It’s nice being one of those people who really can get ready in less than 5 minutes.
And off we go. Dim sum is a lot of fun. We let Jenn’s mom take care of ordering, since neither of us really had a clue what we were doing. Despite it seeming like I wasn’t eating a lot, it didn’t take much to fill me up — I suppose after the 6th or 7th plate, I should have expected I’d be full…
The food was fantastic. I really liked the sticky rice. And I feel a little bad for having jello for dessert, but in my defense… it came with a paper peacock. I had to have the peacock. Who wouldn’t want a peacock with their brunch?
I need to do this again.
Sigh. I’m so jealous. I love dim sum and there are no dim sum restaurants up here. Every time I get out of this city, I go for some Asian food. We have some decent sushi up here, but really, that’s about it.
My favourites are sticky rice and shrimp dumpling.
The other thing about dim sum is that it’s something you can’t really do alone. You need a group of people to go, which is probably why it took so long for you to try it.
Well, it’s not like I don’t have any friends. :) I’ve had lots of other food that’s better with a group!
I’ve never had dim sum either! Can we go when I get back to Vancouver? Then you can pretend that you’re a pro and I’ll be the newbie.
Totally! We’ll bring Jenn, she at least has been more than once… :D
Count me in…I’ve been going since I was a wee bairn, so I’d love to help.
My father used to make Shaomai and Hargao at home. Yummmmy!
Ha ha…the last time I commented was as Griswald and I didn’t think to change it.
Grizwald likes Dim Sum too.
